(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – The arrival of the Victoria Day weekend (May 18-21) marks the return of Southern Bruce County’s temporary residents and visitors. The increased population, along with the anticipated warmer weather, means another busy season at the beaches along the shores of Lake Huron. However, the same cool water that offers refreshment on a hot day also represents a significant threat to swimmers during periods of high wind and large waves. When planning a day at the beach, leave the alcohol at home. Alcohol impairs your judgement; the effects of impairment are more intense under the rays of a hot sun. Impaired judgement becomes a safety risk as conditions can change quickly on the lake. When a strong wind is blowing and large waves are crashing in, beachgoers have to respect the power of the rip current. More commonly known as undertow, this is the force of the water returning to the centre of the lake after hitting shore. Very seasoned, very capable swimmers have lost their lives in the rough waters of Lake Huron. Leading experts recommend swimming across, not against, a rip current, but the best way to protect yourself is to avoid rip currents by staying out of the water. The South Bruce OPP asks all people planning to enjoy the beach this summer to do a self-assessment of their abilities, whether they are driving, swimming or operating a vessel, and then function within their limitations rather than outside of them which increases the risk to their safety and those around them.
