Seasoned angler John McGill of Georgian Bluffs beat the odds and took top honours in the 2012 Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association Spring Fishing Derby.

A proud John McGill wins a $300 Walker Downriggers reel and professional downrigging rod & line donated by Lorne Fletcher of Fletcher Sports and also took home a 75-dollar gift certificate from Wiarton Marina.

Jaxon Gawel’s salmon got him a tackle accessories package presented by Karen Van Nest BPSA Archery leader and member of the 2012 BPSA Prize Team

Junior member 7-year-old Jaxon Gawel of Mallory Beach came first in the salmon category taking home a special tackle package from Pure Fishing.

In spite of their many hours on the water, most participants discovered that generally, the fish were hiding or if you prefer, had lockjaw, during the 3-day event held annually for BPSA members and their guests.

But the derby is designed as a fun event and fun there was at the wrap up fish fry and awards party at the BPSA clubhouse west of Wiarton.

Each year, the Wiarton- based Bruce Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association (BPSA) attracts generous corporate and individual sponsors. Supporting our 350-member conservation club for 2012 are:

Derby chair, Jack Seatter, and his crew did solid work manning the weigh scale. Martha and Jim Martell and their volunteers did a splendid job pulling together the Sunday fish fry.

The BPSA is one of dozens of community clubs operating volunteer-based fish hatcheries in co-operation with Ontario's Natural Resources Ministry (MNR). Their work produces huge benefits. The sports fishery generates 2.5-billion dollars a year for the province's economy. Tourism and economic studies show that since the 1960's, BPSA stocking has helped pump $16-million into the Grey-Bruce economy alone.

To join one of Ontario's respected conservation groups, the BPSA, please contact membership chair Larrilee Leckie at larrileeleckie@gmail.com or at 519-534-0377. If you have questions about the BPSA check our site at http://www.bpsportsmen.com/about_us.htm
