Huron-Kinloss Township is off to Ottawa next month to get more information about siting a used nuclear fuel Deep Geologic Repository (DGR) in the township.

At the council meeting Wednesday night (May 23), clerk Sonya Watson indicated that mayor Mitch Twolan, deputy mayor Wilfred Gamble, and councillors Lillian Abbott and Don Murray are planning to go, along with some members of staff and the public.

Twolan, Watson and administrator Mary Rose Walden met with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) May 14 concerning Step 2 in the siting process which is to identify interest in learning more through the NWMO and conduct an initial screening in Huron-Kinloss.

Watson said staff will work with the NWMO to schedule open houses in the coming months to provide the public with the opportunity to learn about the siting process, and correspondence.

The NWMO will also cover the travel expenses for eight representatives from the township to travel to Ottawa and have further presentations from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) on June 15.

Watson said one thing has already been determined and that is the DGR would be sited only east of Highway 21.
