It was another first for the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre when, on June 21, it presented the beginning of a new classic movie series. The series is a collaboration of the Museum and members of the Southampton Marine Heritage Society as part of plans to commemorate the War of 1812. In addition to the unveiling of an impressive new exhibit at the Museum, organizers realized that there are many people in the area who love ships, sailing, maritime history—and great films! The first maritime-related classic movie in the series was the award winning 'Master and Commander' that starred Russell Crowe. The series however, features movies with a difference. The difference is, that each movie also features an expert commentator who will spend a few minutes explaining to the audience various technical aspects to watch for in the movie and then, at the end of the movie, audience members can interact with the expert about the film just seen.
Gordon Laco answered audience questions The first movie, 'Master and Commander', was fortunate to have expert Gordon Laco, who was not only the Lead Technical Advisor and Historical Consultant on that movie, but also on the series 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Laco gave the audience a personal 'insider's point of view' in both the making of the movie and entertaining anecdotes about the actors. It was an informative, exciting evening that began the series that will be held on alternate Thursday evenings through to August 30. Each movie night begins at 6:30 with a cash bar followed by the movie at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $5, but many have been pre-purchased and seating is limited. For more information: Call 519-797-2080. |
