The Canadian Auto Workers' (CAW) parade is a go for September.

The annual Labour Day parade held by union retirees has been a long-standing tradition in Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores but, this year, there was concern over whether or not it would take place.

Town Council turned down the first application for a parade permit after safety concerns were raised by the local Police Services over the possibility of demonstrations surrounding the opposition to the recent installation of a wind turbine at the CAW Family Education Centre.

Chief of Police, Dan Rivett, had recommended extra police be brought in to ensure safety for participants but asked that the CAW pay for the service.  The CAW however, initially declined.

As a last effort by the two parties last week, negotiations were reached that met the satisfaction of the Police Services and the CAW and Police Chief Dan Rivett submitted a letter to Council. Click here

"We are very pleased this matter was resolved," said Mayor Mike Smith.  "This is a long tradition and is a great day for the entire community."
