Grey Bruce Health Services has closed the Southampton inpatient unit today, Saturday July 28, due to a gastrointestinal illness.

The move to close the unit to new admissions is a precautionary measure and a means of preventing further transmission of the illness. The unit will remain closed until there are no new identifiable cases. The reopening of the unit will be assessed on a daily basis.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal illness include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The illness usually resolves on its own in a few days. The best way to prevent transmission is through proper hand washing.

New medical patients being admitted to the hospital during this time will be accommodated in other hospitals within Grey Bruce Health Services. The Southampton emergency department is operating as normal. The hospital’s visitor policy of two visitors per patient will be strictly enforced during this time. In addition, visitors will be required to wash their hands regularly while in the hospital.

Visitors are asked not to come to the hospital if they are feeling unwell. This situation is being monitored closely, and GBHS is working with Public Health to ensure all precautions are being taken to prevent further transmission.
