Young students learn about their Canadian history and the War of 1812

Walkerton Summer Camp while visiting the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre not only got a chance to see the Earth Rangers they also managed to board the HMS General Hunter. On board they assisted the Bruce County Museum interpreters Steve Atkinson and Matt Davidson fire the cannon.

The ship, the HMS General Hunter, played an important role in the War of 1812.  It was engaged in the Battle of Lake Erie against American invaders from the south, where it was captured.

As an American supply ship, it eventually sunk on the eastern shore of Lake Huron following a major storm.

By chance, winter erosion of sand uncovered the remains of the shipwreck on the beach at Southampton in 2007.   OPG was one of the first organizations to help sponsor the excavation and, when extra hands were needed, OPG volunteers also helped with the effort.

Today, there is a replica of the General Hunter, that has been funded in part by OPG, in the Bruce County Museum.

Dedicated volunteers, most of whom are retirees, and museum staff have helped bring the General Hunter back to life, complete with sails, rigging and cannon (that fires).

So, this summer, visitors have the opportunity to step aboard a British brig and to step back in time to experience first-hand this unique part of Canadian history right here in Bruce County. For more information please visit: <http://www.brucemuseum.ca
