While solar panels now seem to be evident everywhere throughout the countryside, the first building in Saugeen Shores to utilize the energy source at rooftop is Schendel & Sullivan in Southampton, owned by Paul Schendel and Delores Sullivan.

Before the panels could be installed, the entire roof had to reinforced with steel joists in order to hold the 56  5.5 ft. x 40 inch panels, each of which weighs 250 lbs.

Arcadian Projects of Kitchener took two days to complete the installation known as a micro-fit by the Ontario Power Authority.  According to installers, the company has completed many solar panel projects from residential to commercial and on large barns and other farm buildings throughout southwestern Ontario.

The power generated by the panels will go into the electric grid and, according to Delores Sullivan, the entire installation will cost approximately $70,000 and will take approximately a 10-year pay-back period.

"We all have to become aware of the footprint we are leaving on the planet," says Sullivan, who also owns Sisters on Huron in Southampton.  "This is our way of hopefully reducing it when it comes to energy."
