Bruce Power site achieves operational milestone |

Bruce Power continues to make progress with the return to service of Bruce A Units 1 and 2, while making ongoing investments in Units 3 and 4. Unit 1 is now ‘critical’, meaning the nuclear reactor is operating as it progresses through the final stages of commissioning and testing, in preparation of raising power and synchronizing to Ontario’s electricity grid. Unit 1 continues to be on track to achieve commercial operation in the third quarter of this year. The 750-megawatt unit will produce enough electricity to power about 500,000 homes, roughly a city the size of Hamilton. Work is also under way to ensure Unit 2 will soon be generating electricity following a non-nuclear issue that occurred within an hour of synchronization to Ontario’s electricity grid in May. This work program is expected to be complete and Unit 2 generating electricity in the fourth quarter of this year. On the nuclear side of the plant, Unit 2 is also critical. “The Bruce Power team continues to deliver a very impressive work program at Bruce A,” said Mike Burke, senior vice-president, Bruce A Operations. “With this milestone achieved on Unit 1 and activities under way on Unit 2, we are within months of both units providing low-cost, safe and reliable power for the province.” Bruce Power will also execute an expanded outage investment program on Unit 4 starting immediately, in support of extending the life of the unit to the end of the decade. The work program will involve 800 temporary workers at peak. This planned maintenance outage will align the lifespan of Unit 4 to that of Unit 3, which recently underwent a $300-million investment project that extended its life by up to an additional 10 years. “The additional investments in Bruce A, through the expansion of the Unit 4 outage program, will provide both short- and long-term benefits for Ontario ratepayers,” Burke added. “In the short-term, we will have all four Bruce A units operating by year’s end, while, long-term, residents of Ontario will benefit from having a clean, reliable source of electricity for years to come.”

 The operational alignment of Units 3 and 4 is also an important component of future refurbishment planning on the Bruce Power site. Bruce B Units 5, 6, 7 and 8 are all operating at full power.
