I met a woman today named Lori.  She is a person who lives with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Her life has been one of courage and resilience.  Some would describe her as having an intellectual disability.  Others would describe her as daughter, sister, friend, neighbour.  We sat there together talking about many things.  At one point, Lori pointed to her heart and said, “I think in here.”

For many of us, our thoughts and feelings are compartmentalized, separate from one another.  We think with our head and feel with our heart.  Life is divided and the boundaries are clear, logical and apportioned correctly.

But what if Lori is right?  What if the knowledge of the heart is at the heart of it all?

Much of our North American culture which has been inherited from Europe has valued the head over the heart, separating the integration of learning and knowledge.  It is people like Lori who reveal to us something about the heart.  Not that it is solely the place for affection and feeling, but the heart is the powerhouse for knowledge and love.  It is the source for compassionate thought.  It is the stream of thoughtful generosity.  It is a way of life which reveals the heart of the matter.

Matters of the heart are the heart of the matter.  Thanks Lori.
