Keeping a local community hospital alive and operational is an on-going battle. Southampton Memorial Hospital in Saugeen Shores is no exception as organizations and individuals continue to fundraise to provide the services that the Provincial Government has abandoned as cost cutting measures. The local hospital provides primary health care to more than 21,000 is residents during the winter months and more than 40,000 during peak summer months. One of the areas least funded by the provincial government is the actual purchasing of equipment hospitals. The Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation's mission is to raise dollars for capital purposes and to ensure that all donations are used exclusively for the benefit of the community in order to sustain and improve the high level of patient care. Geographically, Saugeen Memorial is one of those rural hospitals that ensures medical care is provided, particularly, during the long winter period when weather plays a key role in accessing health care. This year, the purchase of four vital signs monitors has been determined as a priority at a a value of $4,500 each. |
On February 13th, a 'Heart to Heart' dinner and dance is being hosted by the local Saugeen Shores Cham-bettes at the Lakeshore Recreation in Port Elgin. The Cham-bettes, a group of professional women in the community, fundraise for various reasons; and have raised thousands of the dollars for many needy causes, including the local hospital. "We hope that everyone will join us on February 13th," says Cham-bettes President, Cherie Duhaime. "Out hospital is vital to the community and we (Cham-bettes) have undertaken to ensure that it stays a vital part of the community." See the Event Planner for details on Feb 13, 2010 |
