Students from across Bruce and Grey counties are invited to apply for a spot at the fifth annual Bruce-Grey MedQUEST Health Careers Exploration Program.

Thirty high school students in Grades 10 and 11 will be accepted into the camp, scheduled to run in Walkerton July 12-16. The medical-based program will introduce students to various health care professions by job-shadowing physicians and other health care workers, and through hands-on activities such as physical exams, the resuscitation of a simulated mannequin, the delivery of a simulated infant, and by participating in a mock disaster complete with emergency responders and multiple casualties.

Students who took part in past programs have reported they now see the connection between Grade 12 biology and health care careers due to their experience at MedQUEST.

The Bruce-Grey MedQUEST program is one of several run every summer through the Southwestern Ontario Medical Education Network. The programs are traditionally led by medical students from the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario.

Local students who are interested in applying can visit www.medquestwestern.ca as of Feb. 1. The deadline for applications is March 12. Due to the competitive nature of this program, late applications will not be accepted.
