The Kincardine Lions Club wants to build a boardwalk on the north side of the pier, from the flag pole at the bottom of Harbour Street to the pavilion.

Kincardine council is fine with that, considering the club will fund the project and do all the work.

Dennis Flavell of the Lions Club was on hand last night (Feb. 3), making a pitch for the project, with the support of recreation director Karen Kieffer and the recreation committee. The only request by the club is to purchase the supplies through the municipality in order to save the GST.

The new boardwalk would be constructed over the current pathway, said Kieffer. The intention is to start with a basic boardwalk and add gazebos, gardens, and other amenities in future years as funding allows. The club plans to start construction in April or May of this year.

The project will cost about $19,000, said Kieffer, with the funds coming from the Lions Club and other community donations. The club has spoken with the trails committee, Friends of the Pavilion, and building and planning department and has their support. It will also ensure the boardwalk meets the municipality's accessibility requirements.

"Any time a service club wants to do a project at their expense, I say go for it," said councillor Guy Anderson.

When asked about building on the north side, Flavell said that area is a beautiful spot, with the Tiny Tot Playground and the pavilion. A boardwalk will improve the whole area, he said. The south side already has a perfectly good boardwalk of rail tracks, he added.

As for accessibility, the boardwalk will be made of eight-inch paving blocks, and have handrails. It will be a foot off the ground, said Flavell.

"It's a great plan," said councillor Ron Hewitt. "I wish you all the best."

"Well, all this needs is quick passage and a heartfelt thank you," said mayor Larry Kraemer.

Council agreed. A bylaw will come forward at the Feb. 17 meeting.
