| Kincardine is facing tax arrears of $1.5-million, as of Dec. 31, 2009. A report from revenue/taxation supervisor Nandini Syed of the treasury department was part of the consent agenda, approved by council at its meeting Wednesday night (Jan. 27). According to Syed's report, the total billing for 2009 was $20,492,576.21. Of that, $1,500,765.32 or 7.32 per cent remains outstanding. That's up from 5.69 per cent at the end of 2008. While the majority of the outstanding taxes are from the 2009 tax year ($1,147,868.75), there is still a substantial amount owing from 2008 ($242,876.34), 2007 ($74,736.46), and 2006 and beyond ($35,283.77). A property is eligible for tax registration/tax sale proceedings when the associated tax account has any part of three years taxes outstanding (or more) on Jan. 1 of the current year, states the report. As of Jan. 1, 2010, tax accounts with arrears from 2007 and prior are eligible for tax registration. This process is currently under way. |
Outstanding taxes for 2008 and 2009 are monitored and acted upon in a timely manner, states the report. In addition to internal collection activities (such as mailing of overdue notices, telephone contact and ultimately the municipal tax sale process), staff continues to encourage these accounts to enter into payment plans to reduce and/or eliminate tax arrears.
