"No parking" signs will soon be posted along the west side of River Lane beside Kincardine District Secondary School.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (Jan. 20), Kincardine council agreed to amend the traffic and parking bylaw to add a no-parking area along that stretch of road, allowing students a safe path to cross from class portables to the main school.

Chief building official Michele Barr said KDSS sent in the request because there is concern for the safety of the students. Currently, there is an opening in the fence where the students can access the street. However, parking of cars is allowed directly in front of the opening, making it hard for the students to maneuver around the cars in order to cross River Lane, she said.

An amendment to the traffic and parking bylaw is required in order to post signage and allow for the issuance of tickets, said Barr.

"It's a great idea," said councillor Kenneth Craig, "but who enforces it?"

"The signs will be put up and then our bylaw officer enforces it," said Barr.

Council agreed with the amendment which will come forward for final approval at the Jan. 27 council meeting.
