Kincardine councillor Mike Leggett believes all volunteer firefighters in Ontario should be able to get special licence plates to help them respond to fire calls.

At the Kincardine council meeting Wednesday night (Jan. 27), he brought forward a notice of motion to direct the emergency services committee to review and make recommendation about a motion that reads:

"THAT all volunteer firefighters in Ontario be afforded the same opportunity as full-time firefighters in being able to apply for designated firefighting licence plates from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation as this action will aid volunteer firefighters in responding to emergency events due to the greater recognition from the motoring public."

Leggett also wants a copy of this resolution to be sent to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario for distribution and support from all Ontario municipalities, as well as to transportation minister Kathleen Wynne.

Council accepted the notice of motion which will come forward for discussion at the Feb. 3 meeting. It will then be referred to the emergency services committee which meets Feb. 4.

Deputy mayor Laura Haight suggested in future that such a motion could go to the committee for review before coming to council. Bringing it to council first just delays the process, she said.

Councillor Marsha Leggett said bringing the notice to council let's all of council know what the motion says.
