The Goderich Municipal Childcare Centre may be offering a summertime school-age child program after all.

Earlier this year, council decided to end the program, because of a lack of full summertime participation.

“The problem we were having is that parents would commit to the summer early in the season and then attend only part of the summer,” said treasurer Judy Kay, “but by that time we had already hired staff and put the programs together. So our expenses would be much higher than our revenue ended up being.”

She told council at the meeting Feb. 16, that a parent has suggested that the program be brought back, with a non-refundable, pre-payment for the students in Grades 1-6.

“For each program at that age, you need one teacher for every 15 children, so we would have to have a complete group of 15,” said Kay. “If there were enough children, you could have two groups of 15, but you have to have the minimum of 15 for each grouping, pre-paid, to bring the recommendation back to council."

Kay said a survey will be made available to the public, stating that the program costs $32 per day and will run from July 15 until the last Thursday in August. She said if there is enough support for the pre-payment idea, then she will approach council to bring the summer program back.
