Residents of Malcolm Place Retirement Residence in Kincardine have been cheering on the Canadian athletes at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics - one manicure at a time.

Friday mornings, recreation director Donna Fohkens does manicures for the women, and for the past few weeks, has been painting their fingernails with the medal colours: gold, silver and bronze, and then adding replicas of the Olympic rings, inukshuks, figure skates, bobsleds, and much more.

Fohkens' own fingernails and toenails are sporting the colours of the medals won by  Team Canada - eight gold, six silver, and three bronze. She laughingly said she has room for three more medal colours. If Canada wins more than 20 medals total, she may have to paint her teeth.

"Fridays are our spa days," said Audrey Boron. "We have our hair done and then come and have a manicure."

Fohkens enjoys doing up the ladies' fingernails for festive occasions. In March, it will be for St. Patrick's Day. For Robbie Burns Day, she painted plaid on the nails. She has also decorated the nails with snowflakes, snowmen, and ladybugs.
