Dear Editor:

My name is Douglas DeLaronde and I am a student at KDSS in Mrs. White's class.

I've chosen to reply to a article from the Toronto Star newspaper that occurred on Feb. 21, 2010, “Thousands Mourn Olympic Luger.”

A 21 year-old man was killed when his luge lost control and flung him 145 kilometres into a steel pole. I do not think that the Olympic committee made all the safety precautions it could have and the accident was due to a poor lack of planning on the committee's part.

The luge is a dangerous sport and could have gone wrong numerous different ways. One of them occurred in front of millions of people across the country early this year. I've seen some pretty graphic things, and this is high on the list and I'm sure it's high on the list for many others as well.

If organizers had put even a net around the track, Nodar Kumaritashvili might still be alive today. The Olympic committee should  exercise more caution with regard to the execution of such dangerous sports as the luge. I hope it realizes this and takes better precautions in the future. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Douglas DeLaronde
KDSS
