Kincardine needs a new high school |

| Dear Editor: Leaks, broken lockers, missing ceiling tiles, cracked floors, KDSS (Kincardine District Secondary School) is in rough shape. The Municipality of Kincardine continues to sock money into other areas as our school fades away. For us, the students, to get the best education possible, we need a safe, healthy environment, something we don't have now. Duct tape on the floors, a towel and bucket to catch the water leaks, when is someone going to stand up and say, "We're not going to take it anymore"? Kincardine owes a great deal to tourism, and it is understandable that money must be spent to keep the town as a viable tourist attraction, but at what cost? Our children's education? We need to worry more about the citizens of the town instead of people passing through it. Yes, we needed a new gym and seniors' area at the Davidson Centre. We need a lot of things. What I can't understand is why a new school is so low on the priority list. A new high school would cost a load of money, but would be worth every cent. When we talk about quality of life, does it not start with our children and their future? New additions to our great town are not a bad thing, but are we not putting the cart before the horse? The condition of KDSS is a travesty. We should be embarrassed collectively. Kincardine is a beautiful, peaceful town but a high school in shambles takes away from the town's value. |
A new, better high school would attract more people to settle down and
start a family instead of just spending summers here. The town would
grow and would have more people to contribute to the school's funds.
The students and teachers deserve a better high school in which to
learn and work. A high school isn't just a school, it's a little
community and a part of our community. When's the last time you
strolled the halls of good old KDSS? Take a minute and ask for a tour.
You will be disappointed, but it might make you take action. There is a
reason more new families to the area are choosing to live in Port
Elgin, and it isn't because they have a Wal-Mart. Alex Brough KDSS
