| The
Kincardine District Secondary School Aquatic Knights have gone above
and beyond the usual hard work of a swim team, raising more than $1,000
in a swim-a-thon Monday morning (Feb. 22), to help their teammate Josh
Easton who is battling cancer. "Words cannot express how proud we are of all our swimmers, not only for their work through the season, but for their incredible response to the swim-a-thon to help out Josh," said coach Kelly Young. "Their incredible compassion and dedication resulted in a grand total of $1,037 raised," she said. "What an awesome job!" Swimmers also signed their best wishes on a giant card that was delivered to Josh later in the day. Top earner was Lauren Killin with $135. Morgan Shaw tied with Michelle Siddon for second with $120 each, and the Allingham brothers raised an amazing combined $215. Lauren received an Olympic pin as a prize and the honour of presenting the money to Josh's brother, Joel. A number of team members could not make the Monday morning practice but still did their part to contribute to the fund-raising. Of those who did swim, they decided to have more fun with the event than to go all out for the entire hour, a testament to the camaraderie of this team. The top swimmer was Jessilyn Wolfe with 91 lengths, followed by Steve Young with 84, Sasha Karapas with 82, Caden Allingham with 78, Lauren Killin, Morgan Shaw, Ashlee Banyard, Anthony Rowe and Lubi Horvathova with 70 lengths each, Anna McFarlan and John McCool with 62 each, Maggie Freimanis and Janine Van Veghel with 50 each, Kate McCallum, Carly Schmidt, Hayley Stewart and Alex Morariu with 42 each, and Dana Morariu with 20 lengths. "The event succeeded beyond our wildest dreams," Young said. "We are very pleased." The team dedicated the entire season to Josh and it's not over yet. Six swimmers will travel to Etobicoke next week to compete at OFSAA, and they will do so once again with their teammate in their thoughts and his initials emblazoned on their shoulders and chests. |
