What began as a small place for respite care in the basement of Knox Presbyterian Church, Kincardine, has blossomed into the Kincardine Day Away program in its new home in the Sutton Park Mall. Operated by Home and Community Support Services of Grey-Bruce, the program has received the 2010 Enbridge Quality of Life award, through the Kincardine and District Chamber of Commerce, for contributing to the quality of life of a person, group or organization in the community. "This is fabulous," said Jane Hofstetter, team leader. "It feels as if this program is valued by the community, and it validates what we're doing here. The clients are very proud to be recognized by this award." "It feels great," said Christina Boyd, a client of the Day Away program. "We think it's wonderful." Hofstetter said the program has become more high-profile since it moved to its current location last June. From its initial home in the church, the Day Away moved to a room in the old W.E. Thompson Public School, and then to the south end of Queen Street at the old Bruce Landing building, before taking up residence in the Sutton Park Mall. The Day Away operates under a "team model" for programs operating from just north of Southampton to Point Clark, so there are staff in the Kincardine facility five days per week, including a nurse. The program is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., for adults over the age of 18 with physical disabilities, and for seniors. Activities include games, exercises, and entertainment, with special guests. |
The Dining Club is offered on the fourth
Thursday of each month, from noon to 2 p.m. Each patron receives a hot
meal and enjoyable entertainment at a cost of $9; call ahead, at
519-396-9555. The Day Away is still in need of volunteer drivers. If you can help, contact Hofstetter at 519-396-9555. |
