Family is a social unit consisting of loved ones, including parents, children, grandparents and relatives who support and nourish its members.

Value is defined as the quality or worth of a thing.  Family value can be a traditional set of social and spiritual standards defined by the family and a history of customs that provide the emotional and physical basis for raising a family.

The values we live with on a day-to-day basis are the foundation of our children’s learning and functioning. The three important things in most peoples' lives are fun, work and love, which ultimately satisfy the needs of key areas of happiness - health, wealth and relationship. All of these are important but it takes skill and willpower to balance them in real life.

Often times, we work hard because we are invested in our own career goals, competitions, material things and financial rewards.  The result however, can be a loss of balance;and, without a balanced life that incorporates fun and having loving relationships, our lives become stressful, overwhelming and unsatisfying.

Traditionally, people define their values as family  first and, ,yet we find ourselves with very little time or energy left to spend quality time with family.

Often, misunderstandings and miscommunication can happen when the assumption is made that earning a living is equivalent to making the family content. Part of good communication is to examine and discuss with family members the things that make everyone happy.  Sometime, the best approach is to make an actual list of activities, that can include spiritual, career, family and fun, and then prioritize the list and actually see how we spend our time.

Sometimes, looking at the list can help determine if there is a problem in priorities and, if so, then action can be taken to achieve more balance.

It is well known that a strong family unit with integrated values not only creates a safe, positive and supportive place for all members to thrive, but sets a foundation for a good community.

Family day is a good opportunity for all of us to evaluate and act toward balancing our life style. Some of the key points of building good relationships are  accepting other family members unconditionally, having open communication and learning to pause or even withdraw from confrontation.

On this Family Day, remember to spend quality time together.

Have a nice family day with love to all,

Chandra Tripathi
