Get ready for the whirlwind of meet-the-candidates nights because 2010 is a municipal election year.

Amendments to the Ontario Municipal Act mean some changes for next year's proceedings, as Huron-Kinloss council learned at the December general committee meeting.

Nominations will be accepted as of Jan. 4, 2010, and nomination day is Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. which is the final day to withdraw your name if you no longer want to run for municipal council.

Municipal voting day has been moved to the fourth Monday in October which is Oct. 25, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; previously, it was the second Monday in November.

The deadline to appoint a compliance audit committee is Oct. 1, 2010. This committee consists of three to seven citizens who review a candidate's financial statements that are challenged.

The first day of the new council term is Dec. 1, 2010, and the deadline for filing financials is March 25, 2011.
