An update from Haiti

Just want to give a quick update from Port au Prince.

Tomorrow is the last day of the American team with whom we have been working this week. Three of us who are Canadian are overlapping with a new team of another three coming in next week.

Since this is a clinic set up only for the disaster, we are trying to transition into more community work as many of the illnesses we are seeing are common here due to the extreme poverty, but much worse because of the lack of food and sanitation. We have seen tetanus, typhoid and dengue fever (I say this for those medically inclined) Many of the children are malnourished and drinking dirty water. I saw one yesterday that was 15 month old and very ill. His mother was killed in the quake and relatives were giving him what they could but he was extremely undernourished. We sent him to the hospital.

Last night we had rain - normally rainy season starts in March so this is early and with so many living in makeshift tents, some in low laying areas, the health authorities expect an increase in infectious diseases. SP just got a whole lot of tarps and plastics cleared at customs and today got it to the base so they are working hard to get some improvement for the ones still so in  need of shelter.

Again, thank you so much for your prayers. If you are on my "Haiti update" list, you have been chosen to receive theses emails because I know that you are supporting me and the team here in prayer and are concerned too for the people of Haiti. Thank You.

Signing off and heading to bed.

Shalom

Isla
