The 'Pay as You Throw' program has been successful beyond expectations which has resulted in an actual decrease in the amount of refuse going into the landfill site in Saugeen Shores. Therefore, while residents are paying $1.50 per bag for garbage pick-up, the decrease has meant a loss in revenue for the landfill. Instead of increasing the bag rag rate however, it was decided that the tipping fee for landfill use would be increased. The rate for sorted household, shingles, brick and concrete will go from $80 per tonne to $100 and unsorted waste will increase from $110 to $125 per tonne. and there is no charge for tire disposal as it is now covered under Ontario Stewardship funding. In Saugeen Shores, it will cost more to be buried as the Cemetery fee almost doubles. It was found that Saugeen Shores has, up until now, been charging half the rate of other similar communities and that there has been no increase since 2001.
