Three Meets in Three Days for Gymnasts Swing, Spring and Flip Club athletes of Saugeen Shores were very busy over the weekend. The Club sent seven athletes and three coaches to three different meets starting on Friday and ending Sunday night. On Friday, coach Shay Ireland-Hedit took artistic gymnastics athletes Devan Gouin (Saugeen Shores), Sierra Voisin (Mildmay) and Vanessa Phillips (Saugeen Shores) to the Muskoka Classic Invitational Meet in Bracebridge. This was the first meet of the year for these athletes, and they were excited to perform their new routines. In the Level 3, 10-year-old category, Vanessa and Sierra performed well. Vanessa took 4th on Bars, 8th on Balance Beam and Floor Exercise, and 9th on Vault. Her overall score of 36.100 put her in 8th place overall. Vanessa had an excellent beam routine and stuck everything, although there were a few wobbles. Sierra had a strong bar routine that blew most of the competition away and took the Silver medal, and placed 5th on Vault, 7th on Floor Exercise, and 9th on Balance Beam. Her overall score of 38.350 put her in 7th place overall. In the Level 3, 11-year-old category, Devan showed her strength. She took the Bronze medal on Floor Exercise, with her dance and tumbling throughout the exercise stunning everyone to receive a score of 10.00, and placed 6th on Vault, Uneven Bars, and Balance Beam for an overall placing of 7th scoring a total of 36.750. On Saturday, Coach John Craig was in Scarborough at the 2nd Trampoline Cup, which is the 2nd of 3 qualifiers that athletes must attend to earn a spot to compete at Provincial Championships. Provincial B 15 + athlete Spencer Turbitt (Owen Sound) and Provincial C Under 12 athlete Shiann Booth had trained hard for this event and were ready to jump. Shiann had an excellent warm up, and performed a great first routine. Her kick outs from flips were tight, and her toe-point was unmatched. She scored 23.4 for this performance, putting her in 9th place after the first round. Her second routine was also clean, and ranked 6th in that round with a score of 25.5. Her overall total of 49.2 put her in 8th place overall. This score is also the second score that Shiann needed to qualify for Provincial Championships in April. Spencer also had a great warm up, and a decent first routine. He scored 20.6 on this and was ranked 9th after the first round of routines. In his second routine, Spencer battled with travelling around the trampoline, but managed to keep on the bed to finish the routine. The travel cost him though, and his overall total of 44.9 put him in 8th place overall.

On Sunday, coach Patty Bowman traveled to the 3rd Qualifier in Bracebridge with Caitlin Sullivan and Abi Martin (both of Saugeen Shores). The girls were competing in Level 5 14 +, and were hoping to do well. Caitlin had a good performance and placed 3rd all around. She had a personal best score on the Floor Exercise, taking 1st place. She also placed 2nd on Bars. Abi finished 7th place on Uneven Bars with a great routine, placed 9th on Floor Exercise, 10th on Vault and 11th on Balance Beam. She placed 11th overall. Abi and Caitlin now must wait to see if they fall in the top 50 per cent in Ontario in order to proceed to the Ontario Cup, which is an elimination tournament that will pare down the competitors to a total of 24 per category.
