Work continues in Southampton Harbour |

Work continues at the Southampton Harbour. The work on the south side wall of the harbour is nearing completion but work is still continuing on the north side. The south side pier has been built up with the addition of steel 'planks'/sheeting, each 30 feet long and weighing approximately 1,000 lbs. The sheeting was pounded down into the river bed against the existing wall, that had been eroded over time by the water's wave action.
Sheeting has been levelled. Portable furnace melts the ice between the sheeting and the pier The depth of the sheeting has varied with the river bed and the 'hardpan' clay that stops any further penetration. According to Donnie Bryce, the strips of sheeting have varied in the depth that they could be pounded into the bed. The depth ranged from 10 to more than 20 feet deep and then the remaining amount on top was levelled and evened out with 'torch cutting'. A portable 'furnace' and lines is currently being used to melt the ice so that gravel can be poured between the metal sheeting and existing pier. The top between the two will then be topped with concrete. The area adjacent to the south wall has been considered as ideal for a boat launch, although it was not part of the original proposal and has not been approved by the Town.
An optical illusion? No ... it's looking down over the edge of the wall of at Southampton Harbour at the bubbles of the divers below Heading east on the wall along the Saugeen River, where fishing boats and the Chantry |Island Tour Boat are moored during the summer, divers are under the frigid waters repairing a fissure in the wall.

Installing the sheeting despite heavy ice On the north side of the river, and north side of the groin where the Range Light is located, similar work is being carried on. Mammoth Bruce Peninsula quarry rock has been cut and will be installed up against the metal sheeting to provide even more stability once work is near completion.
