Manley was in the region in recognition of International Women's Day (IWD), as spokesperson for Herbal Magic and as guest speaker at the IWD event held at the CAW Education Centre in Port Elgin, Saugeen Shores.

She spent the morning at Herbal Magic in Kincardine and then the afternoon in Port Elgin before attending the IWD evening event.

Manley came directly from the 2010 Olympic Games as commentator and spent the entire day Monday signing autographs for local Olympic and figure skating enthusiasts.

"I remember the years of hard times," said Manley, "and how my mom kept saying 'it will pay off one day'."

"That moment when I won the Olympic medal changed my whole life and future," added Manley.  "I also really didn't realize how it affected the lives of Canadians.  At the Olympic Games in Vancouver, I was mobbed by Canadians on the street and, only then, realized the impact that my winning the medal had on the entire country."

Manley, who lost her mother to cancer, expressed her empathy with this year's Canadian Bronze medal winner, Joannie Rochette.  "I understood completely how she felt," said Manley.  "Like Joannie, my mother spent every day in arenas with me and, for Joannie to skate just a couple of days after her mother's death ... it was her way of staying grounded and doing what her mother would have wanted."

Manley, who has struggled with her weight throughout life, credits Herbal Magic with making a difference.

"I truly believe my mother's spirit lead me to Herbal Magic," says Manley.  "I was totally depressed after my mom died and had always been an emotional eater anyway.    When Herbal Magic asked me to beco"me involved in the program, it literally saved my life.  I was 30 lbs. overweight and my blood pressure was through the roof.  Today, I am smaller than I was at my skating weight and my blood pressure is completely normal without medication.

Do I believe in Herbal Magic and its program?  You bet I do!"
