Huron-Kinloss has received $100,000 from the owners of the Ripley Wind Power Project as compensation for damage that may have been done to local roads during construction of the wind farm.

Monday night (March 15), township treasurer Jodi MacArthur and public works director Hugh Nichol confirmed receipt of the money through an agreement with Suncor Energy Products Inc. and Acciona Wind Energy Canada Inc.

MacArthur said the money will go toward the 2010 capital budget for paving roads.

Nichol said the 2nd and 4th concessions saw most of the traffic during construction of the wind farm. The 4th has already been completely paved, so part of these funds will be used on the 2nd.

The money not only compensates for any damage that may have been done, but also provides ongoing support for these roads in the future, states a press release from the township and Acciona.

"Suncor and Acciona gratefully acknowledge the strong leadership and hard work of mayor Mitch Twolan, council and staff of Huron-Kinloss in negotiating this agreement to the benefit of the entire community."
