Kincardine deputy mayor Laura Haight is questioning facts that have been reported in the print media that agreements are in place for the old Westario Power building to become a Learning Centre.

At the council meeting March 17, she noted surprise at reading that the municipality has rented out the building for a school. The report stems from the breakfast meeting March 11 at which Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced a commitment of $500,000 over the next four years to help the Lake Huron Learning Collaborative build capacity for post-secondary education in the Huron-Bruce region.

Haight asked if the rental of space in the building had been confirmed by council.

"Those facts may not have been accurately reported," said mayor Larry Kraemer.

Clerk Donna MacDougall clarified that a presentation was made by the Lake Huron Learning Collaborative in November, 2008. Council then discussed the issue in August, 2009, and agreed that the staff of the Learning Centre is responsible to come up with a business plan/operation agreement, to obtain corporate sponsors, and get letters of support from participating groups.

"So, there is no commitment by council with the Learning Collaborative for the old Westario Power building?" asked Haight.

The answer was no.
