The newly-dubbed Walkers Lookout on the Huron Terrace Bridge

It seemed appropriate that Kincardine council chose St. Patrick's Day to select an Irish name for the new tourist attraction on the Huron Terrace Bridge.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (March 17), economic development and tourism manager Steve Murray said the tourism committee (CHAT) had received more than 100 submissions for naming this wide piece of sidewalk just east of the Kincardine Lighthouse, created when the bridge was reconstructed last year.

The committee narrowed the choice to three: Kincardine Harbour Lookout, Walkers Lookout, and Sunset Lookout. The staff recommendation was Walkers Lookout, said Murray, noting it is a link to local history as it was Paddy Walker who re-routed the Penetangore River so it flowed past his tavern. He said it would also tie in well with the restored tavern, the Walker House, nearby.

Murray said the name also speaks to the active lifestyle that many residents and visitors enjoy with the wonderful selection of trails and parks in this area, including the key linking of the beach with the downtown core.

"By naming this feature, the tourism department will be able to direct visitors to perhaps the best place along Lake Huron to view sunsets, as well as the Phantom Piper, harbour activity and the lighthouse," said Murray.

The $250 cost for two banners for the new light standards installed on the bridge, advertising the new name, have already been budgeted in the seasonal decorations budget, Murray said.

"I think we're using the word 'lookout' too much," said deputy mayor Laura Haight, adding that she has heard there is a groundswell of people who are pushing to have it called "Paddy's Porch."

The committee agreed on Walkers Lookout, with the issue to be brought forward for council's final approval April 7.
