The Tiverton Thunder bantam girls have won the WOAA white division year-end tournament championship.

The girls opened the tournament Friday night (March 5) in Belmore with a 1-0 win over a very-determined Kincardine team. Amber Woods scored the lone goal, assisted by Sarah Catto.

In Game 2, Saturday (March 6) in Wingham, the girls played Upper Maitland, and the teams were evenly-matched. Smart defensive play by Tiverton's rookies, Rebekah Wharry and Bailey McConnell, helped to keep the score at a 1-1 tie.

Shortly into the second overtime period, Tiverton blasted one by the opponent's goalie. Goal scorers were Sarah Catto and Amber Woods, with assists to Alexis Roote and Karen Roppel.

An hour later, Tiverton was on the ice again, against  a tough Lucknow squad. The game provided fans with exciting end-to-end action. Leah Tuck was awesome on the penalty-kill, while strong defensive play came from Lauren Eby, Karen Roppel and Michelle Roppel, keeping Tiverton in the game.

The match was scoreless at the end of regulation time. Two exciting overtime periods still saw the match tied at 0-0.

Tiverton finally won the game in shoot-outs, scoring two goals to Lucknow's one. Goal scorers were Sarah Catto and Amber Woods.

Tiverton's third game of the day was played in Brussels against TCDMHA HL. Tiverton took a quick lead when Alexis Roote popped one in early in the first period. A short while later, Lauren Eby drove one home with a strong point shot.

TCDMHA came out fast and furious in the second and by the end of the period, the score was 2-2. And that's the way it stayed for the rest of the game, plus two overtime periods.

Tiverton finally captured the championship after a nail-biting shoot-out. Goal scorers were Sarah Catto and Lindsey Gossell.

Goaltender Elyse Wolski was amazing between the pipes all weekend. She stood on her head many times to keep Tiverton in the game.

The Tiverton girls appreciate their coaching staff: coach Mike Catto, assistant coach Dave Beamish, trainer Kelly Catto and manager Kim Catto, for a very successful season. They also appreciate the Tiverton Old Diggers for providing the team with new hockey jerseys, and Scotiabank for its very generous donation.
