When you walk into Malcolm Place, it feels like home.

That's the warm and caring atmosphere that owners Russell and Brenda Bateman have brought to the retirement residence, located at 255 Durham St., Kincardine.

The couple purchased Malcolm Place in September, 2006, and enjoy making it home to the 35-40 people who live there, as well as the 24 staff who work there.

The glorious entranceway, the bright and welcoming lounge, the dining room and newly-renovated sunroom all speak of the warm hospitality that greets residents and guests, alike, at Malcolm Place. It's easy to step back in time at this heritage mansion, complete with gleaming oak floors in the sunny hall leading to the original staircase. It also has an elevator in the modern addition to carry you up to comfortable retirement living.

Built in 1875, the heritage home was purchased in 1923 by James Malcolm, chairman of the Andrew Malcolm Furniture Factory. Much of the furniture found in the residence today includes period pieces that provide a beautiful ambiance and atmosphere in the home.

The Batemans are dedicated to maintaining the architectural integrity of the home while continuing to offer the very finest of service, care and accommodation in the area.

The residence has 41 rooms, including heritage suites, bedsitting rooms, and independent living apartments.

Located in downtown Kincardine, Malcolm Place offers: professional 24-hour care; comfort and quality of life; homemade meals from scratch, and food for special diets; community involvement; social and recreational services; housekeeping and laundry services; safety and security; a variety of care packages; a beauty salon on site; and friendly volunteers.

There are local physicians available, and pharmacy services nearby.

The building is clean and well-maintained, and features a wheelchair-accessible ramp and an elevator.

They encourage people to come for short stays - two or three months - for permanent or respite care. In fact, go for a tour of the building and stay for lunch to sample the high-quality food available at Malcolm Place.

The Batemans have made their home in Kincardine and love it here. Brenda has become involved in the community, serving as a director on the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation, involved in Cops for Cancer and is a member of the Huron Shores Lions Club.

She and Russell encourage other organizations to use Malcolm Place to hold meetings and events.

They hold regular open houses to show off the heritage building and invite people to attend the annual events, such as the strawberry social and Christmas tea. The building is also showcased during Doors Open and the annual Heritage Walk.

"We encourage people to stop by and visit," says Brenda. "This is a home for our residents and our staff. We're all family here at Malcolm Place."
