Despite a few glitches with scheduling, the fully-semestered system at Kincardine District Secondary School is a success.

Up until September, 2009, KDSS was operating under a hybrid system, with Grades 9 and 10 non-semestered, and Grades 11 and 12 semestered.

This school year had the first Grades 9 and 10 classes in the semester system: four subjects from September to January, and four different subjects from February to June, with examinations in February and June. Some classes had culminating activities rather than exams.

As students get back into the groove after March Break, with their second set of four subjects, vice-principal Sheryl Elliott says the exam schedule at the start of February was a lot less chaotic.

"It was more streamlined," she says. "The students each had four exams. They wrote their exams on the day they had the subject, based on a schedule of Periods 1-4. The scheduling was more conflict-free."

As the parent of a Grade 9 student at KDSS, she says the semester system is much better, with pupils concentrating on four subjects and four exams, and then on to four new subjects.

It was not as easy for the teachers because they would have to draw up two different exams for the same subject if they had classes in two separate periods.

"The semester system is much better for the students, but it's more challenging for the teachers," says Elliott.
