What is a Internet definition of a Social Network?
A social network is a structure made of
individuals (or organizations) called "nodes," which are
tied (connected) by one or more specific types of
interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, financial
exchange, dislike, sexual relationships, or
relationships of beliefs, knowledge or prestige.
We all have been exposed to them before the Internet. People join clubs, sporting associations, lodges and churches. The internet has allowed us to extend the 'geography' of our nodal connections beyond our neighbourhood and village life. The nodal connections are enhanced by the speed and power of the Internet. Twitter and Facebook are examples. Under them there are millions of connections and pooling of interests and information. These connections can range from just using an Instant Messenger or cc email connection to placing information on 'The Wall' on Facebook. With the power increasing you will see Skype like group work spanning out. These will not be organized meetings over the Internet, but chaos with people appearing and disappearing on your screen like the members of a now visual chat room. They will appear in person or as avatars that have real or hidden personalities. This is already going on, but it is limited by the speed and power available. It only lacks the proper user interface. Net meetings are not quite there yet. |
Special interest forums have a way of growing and then changing so that members leave due to the new environment. Now, are they important? The case can be made that they are in the same class as joining a lodge. People like to feel the power of us over them. It's the power of 'we'. The library will make life better. Social networks seem to make it more tolerable to some.
