Kincardine is no longer holding a free dump day. This year, spring clean-up day is June 5 and it's going to be a little different. Public works manager Jim O'Rourke told Kincardine council Wednesday night (April 7) that the event will encourage recycling and reduce the tipping fees for items that don't qualify for curb-side collection. The clean-up day will feature "TV's for Toonies" - bring in your old television set or computer for recycling for only a $2 fee. The regular fee is $16. Clean up your yard and dispose of brush and yard waste at no charge. And clean out your basement and garage and bring in all your old broken furniture and other large items at no charge. The regular fee for brush is $10, and for large household items, $85/tonne. The event will be held during regular landfill hours. The Ward 1 landfill site is open from 8 a.m. to noon; Ward 2, 12:30-4:30 p.m.; and Ward 3, 8-11:30 a.m. The landfill site attendant will limit quantities to normal household amounts; and items suitable for curb-side collection will not be allowed. Councillor Kenneth Craig asked if this is truly a best practice for managing solid waste.

"I know it's well-received by the community as a way to landfill large items," he said, "but why would we fill our landfill with junk at lower fees?" "That's an excellent question," said O'Rourke. "The public works committee wanted to get away from the free dump day and turn it into an event to encourage recycling. But we have to take it one step at a time." "It's a way to accommodate people who want to get rid of large items," said deputy mayor Laura Haight, "and it's an opportunity to clean up the community and get ready for tourist season." Council approved the spring clean-up day, as outlined by O'Rourke.
