Kincardine residents can now recycle a new item. Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling is accepting spiral box board in the Blue Box. Kincardine councillor Kenneth Craig told council Wednesday night (April 7) that such things as Pringles containers can now be recycled. "I'm looking forward to the next item," he said. Craig also asked for discussion of the minutes from the Feb. 26 meeting of the public works committee. The minutes indicate that Bruce Recycling's contract renewal is in October. "Has there been any discussion about amendments to services or schedules? Or a reduction in services?" he asked. Deputy mayor Laura Haight, chairperson of public works, said there was general discussion about a one-year renewal which did not get much support, and about switching the schedules for recycling and garbage collection. Public works manager Jim O'Rourke said he had asked Bruce Recycling manager Vince Cascone for a price to extend the contract to the end of the year to give the municipality some breathing room if it decides to put the contract to tender. He has also asked Cascone for terms and conditions for a three-year renewal. O'Rourke added that the committee discussed eliminating the cardboard pick-up for urban areas which is fairly expensive. "With the financial pressures we continue to be under, perhaps everybody in the community can help hold these expenses at bay," said Craig.

Haight said the plan is to have O'Rourke meet with Cascone and bring a proposal to the public works committee which will then bring a recommendation to council about improvements and changes in services for recycling and garbage collection. "The monthly cardboard collection in Ward 1 may have to go by the wayside," she said. "People could put their garbage on one side of the road, like they do in rural areas," said councillor Gordon Campbell. "That would save a lot of stopping for the garbage collector." Council agreed with Haight's suggestion and will wait for a recommendation from the committee.
