Sewers North of the Saugeen -- Money approved  $17,000,000

Town Council(continued)

Under the new Infrastructure Stimulus fund, Saugeen Shores has had three of its five 'wish list' projects approved. At the top of the list, is the new sewer and street upgrade project north of the Saugeen River to the tune of $17 million. The project will result in one third having to be paid by residents who will be required to tie into the upcoming new system.

Notice of the funding came out only two weeks prior to the council meeting and has restrictions. Projects must be proven to be 'shovel-ready' and must be completed by March 15, 2011. In other words, they must be projects where all the pre-work has been done so that they can go to tender quickly.

The next project to be approved is the Concession 10 Storm Sewer, pegged at $ 1,210,000.

"We are receiving approximately $20 million," said Mayor Mike Smith, "almost half of the entire funding for the area and that's because we have all the plans in place, which was one of the requirements to be shovel ready."

The last item is the paving of the shore road along Mirimachi Bay complete with bike lane. "This has long been an item that people have asked for and now it will happen."

The announcement was part of a joint Federal-Provincial announcement made Friday by MP Ben LOBB and MPP Carol Mitchell
