Saugeen Shores now has an official 'noise control' by-law.

After several complaints by residents during the summer months of excessive noise, Saugeen Shores police presented a proposed by-law to council on Monday.

While loud music seemed to be at the root of the noise problem and complaints, council also said that it recognized that the community has a "heavy reliance on the tourist trade and, in particular, the atmosphere created by summer businesses."

Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Police Services, Doug Freiburger said that he felt police would use their discretion when it came to answering complaints and each would be dealt with according to the situation at the time.

Several general prohibitions apply however, includng:

  • persistent barking, calling of whining of a domestic pet or any animal except those used for and located on agricultural areas

  • squealing of motor vehicle tires

  • use of a horn, whistle, alarm, bell, gong or like

  • detonation of explosives

  • operation of an air conditioner, pool, filter, heat pump or like that is not in proper working order

  • operation of a combustion engine without effective exhaust or muffling device in proper working order

  • operation of a vehicle radio, stereo or the like

  • the use of a drive-thru speaker where volume allows conversation to be clearly audible from a 'Point of Reception'

  • selling or advertising by shouting, yelling or amplified sound

While the hours of prohibition vary with each activity, in general, the hours apply from 9:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. or 11 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
