O'CONNOR, Mary Irene "GrannyO" (nee Bothen) passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 in her 99th year, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Hamilton. Irene was born on Christmas Eve, 1918 at St. Joseph's Hospital.

On June 7, 1941, Irene married James Henry O'Connor (Deceased 1977) in Hamilton. Irene and Jim raised five children Jim (Jane), Brian (Barbara), Bruce (Pat), Jude (Paul) and Bernie (Darlene).

In 1953, Irene and Jim, following Jim's brothers and families, moved to Detroit to raise their young family. Irene was a proud Detroiter for 30 years. She developed many lifelong friendships and memories from her time living in the Motor City.

Irene returned to her hometown of Hamilton for her retirement years.

In her early years, Irene was a ranked tennis player winning an Ontario Youth Tennis championship. Irene was a devout Roman Catholic.

GrannyO was an extremely proud Grandmother to her fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. She loved to travel and to spend holidays with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their homes in Ontario, California, Michigan, Colorado and North Carolina sharing her positive influence and joy.

Irene had a zest for life and curiosity that was unparalleled. She was a sharp, independent, remarkable woman who cherished her family and friends. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge, the Philharmonic, the theatre, and attending a new movie release.

As well, she enjoyed lively conversation and debate, music, and her trusted iPad. She was current, topical and enjoyed learning.

According to her grandson, Pat O'Connor of Southampton, "She was a great lady, lived alone and was as sharp as a tack.  We thought she would live to be 106.  Unfortunately, as she went to get her morning newspaper, she fell and hit her head and had bleeding on the brain.  The doctor said, "it is only a matter of time" to which she replied with a smile ... "I'm ready".
