"Following a public hearing held on April 12, 2017 in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to renew Ontario Power Generationís (OPG) waste facility operating licence for the Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF), located in the Municipality of Kincardine, Ontario. The licence will be valid from June 1, 2017 until May 31, 2027."

The preferred plan is to construct a DGR for low and intermediate waste.  That project, if approved, will be the final repository.  In the interim, plans must continue for above ground storage.

Note that this approval will result in building extensive construction.  One of the many reasons for the positive recommendation of the Joint Review Panel's decision on the DGR was to avoid long term construction of facilities to house above ground the storage of low and intermediate waste.

It was, however, recognized that some construction was needed because of the build time for the final storage via DGR.
