Dr. Steve MacKinnon has agreed to extend his current
commitment to work in the Emergency Room of the Grey Bruce Health
Services Hospital – Southampton Site. Dr. MacKinnon commenced his
responsibilities in August 2012 and has agreed to extend his stay by an
additional year ending in July 2014.
Dr. MacKinnon will work a minimum of 15 emergency room shifts per month except when pursuing additional education.
Dr. MacKinnon will to continue to lease the Town owned condominium on Arlington Street for this time period.
Through the efforts of the services provided by Peggy Zeppieri, full-time physician recruiter, the region has also been very fortunate to negotiate a Physician Services Agreement with Dr. Michael Ballantine.
Dr. Ballantine is an ER physician, and is prepared to relocate to the area upon completion of his education this spring.
As previously reported in the Kincardine Times, "... in a unique arrangement, Kincardine agreed to provide $100,000 toward the medical school graduate who has agreed to practise emergency room medicine at the Kincardine hospital.
At a June 2nd meeting, Kincardine council approved an agreement with Ballantine to help fund him through his final year of medical school at the University of Western Ontario Shulich School of Medicine and Dentistry with his residency to include a year of emergency medicine.
It was agreed that Ballantine would receive $20,000 per year, from 2011-2015 inclusive, with the expectation that he would establish himself as a full-time emergency department physician at the Kincardine hospital."
Incentive costs to be incurred by Saugeen Shores are partially offset by the Bruce Power Physician Recruitment donation to the municipality and the balance is included in the physician recruitment budget. Obligations incurred by Kincardine in relation to his commitment to that community are borne by them directly.
He is expected to begin no later than September, 2014, and will have a minimum of 13 shifts, equally distributed between night and day shifts. He will maintain that position for a minimum period of five years.
His services will also be shared between the Kincardine and Saugeen Shores communities and his commitment to Saugeen Shores includes the provision of a minimum of 11 shifts of Emergency Room coverage as of July 2013 for a four year period.
The previous addition of Dr. Leblanc, Dr. MacKinnon and Dr. Zwardon goes a long way towards achieving full staffing of the ER locally that has been sought for the last number of years. This stability will assist Grey Bruce Health Services with the project to expand the ER in the coming months.
