The first big storm of the winter hit Bruce and Grey Counties Thursday with high winds, snow and white-out conditions. Hwy. 21 from Port Elgin to Amberley on the Lake Huron coastline was closed along with several other secondary highways throughout the region. Bruce Nuclear Power station often relies on what is known as the Lake Range Road which is somewhat sheltered by the tree line of McGregor Point National Park. As a result of Hwy 21 being closed however, the secondary road actually had ,what is known in urban centres, as a traffic back-up. Lake Huron reacted to the storm with giant waves crashing against the coast line and, in Southampton, the water rose in the Saugeen River as water flowed from the lake into the river mouth. The forecast for tomorrow, Friday [Dec. 11] is about the same. Among those happiest with the first storm of the winter are school students who have had two 'snow days' and may see a third on Friday, as all school buses have been taken out of commission as the barricades go up the roadways stopping all travel.
