Alice McLaren, co-chair of the Transportation Ad Hoc Committee to Council with Joyce Scammell, presented the most recent update regarding the possibility of public transportation in Saugeen Shores for those with limited mobility. Among the areas determined, where a system of this kind would be used, are personal health care appointments, shopping, recreation and work. McLaren pointed out in the report that the median age for the population of Saugeen Shores is 48, almost 10 years older than the provincial medium. In addition, the committee has determined that there is a definite need/demand for a public transit service for persons 55 and older and those who meet the Ontario Disability criteria. The five 'A's of transportation were introduced - Availability, Accessibility, Acceptability and Adaptability. The committee has also been exploring the possibility of partnering with local taxi companies and, in addition, the committee reviewed several private organizations that provide services of this nature. "There has to be a partnership," said McLaren, "between the Town, a not-for-profit group and the service provider." Among the several recommendations to council, the committee put forth that council, in 2010, should move forward with a more detailed business plan to deliver public transit services to the identified target group of the community based on the service delivery model presented in the report. The committee also recommended that council budget for the start-up of the net capital costs in 2011 with the goal of starting the service either in the fall of 2011 or early in the spring of 2012. Mayor Mike Smith assured the ad-hoc Committee that council would be looking at the proposal and he agreed, "There have a variety of ways that other communities have done this and we should look at that." |
