Saugeen Shores Ad-hoc Environmental Committee presented a number of issues it is looking at, at the council meeting held last week. Included in the Committee's presentation was its top 10 priorities: Composting; a Calendar of environmental dates; River/Beach clean-up; Bike racks; Arbour programs; Rain barrels; Additional Blue Box items; A Re-Use/exchange depot at Landfill site; Sustainable Planning and becoming a Partner for Climate Change. Committee Chair and Town Councilor, Victoria Serda, pointed out that several communities were already implementing the priorities listed in the committee's report. "Re-use or exchange sites at local landfills have become very popular. Let's not forget that one man's trash is another's treasure and we should be encouraging an exchange of goods that otherwise would go into landfill." Councilor Diane Huber expressed that, "The Committee deserves a very big thank-you. I think there are some real possibilities here to be considered at budget time this year ... and it's time." Mayor Mike Smith agreed, "There are some great ideas." He also said however, that some of them will have a budgetary affect and, therefore, he said that staff will be asked to come forward with some ideas on how to implement the points raised in the report.
