The Southampton Community Band held its 6th Annual Christmas Concert Wednesday evening in the Southampton Town Hall. Approximately 150 people attended the event that featured a wide variety of music. The Southampton Jazz Band, conducted by Kent Boys, started off the concert with the ever-popular Christmas selection, 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch' arranged by Mike Story and then moved into a Latin rhythm version of 'White Chritmas' followed up by the popular Beatles tune, 'Hey Jude'. As an encore, the band went back in time to the 1920s with an excellent rendition of 'Puttin' on the Ritz'. From jazz, the concert moved to the Southampton Chime Choir with handbells conducted by Jean Beaton. The Choir played a variety of well-known holiday pieces, including 'Carol of the Bells', 'O Tannenbaum', 'Angels We Have Heard on High' and 'Jingle Bells' among others. The third and final section of the concert featured the Southampton Community Band of more than 60 musicians. The Band, under the leadership of Boys, offered an eclectic assortment of music ranging fropm the Royalty Rag and Dona Nobis Pacem to We Five Kings and In the Bleak Mid-Winter among others. The band ended, as it does every year with an audience-participation holiday sing-along of traditional holiday favourites. The Community Band and volunteers, the Friends of the Band, are actively looking for new members and volunteers for the new year. "For anyone who has ever wanted to play an instrument or who wants to renew playing again or who wants to volunteers," says conductor Kent Boys, "this is an opportunity to become involved in music.
