December 28 – Saugeen Shores Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations.
The celebration begins 5:30 PM at the Plex
The fun doesn’t end when the Olympic Torch finishes its historic journey
through Saugeen Shores. The celebration of this great event continues at
The Plex. And, your Torch Bearers will be there to share in the fun.
The party starts at 5:30 with Face Painting, a no-charge Children’s
Carnival plus “Fun in Athletics” interactive equipment.
Then we kick things off with two Tyke hockey games played simultaneously
across the big rink.
Figure skating takes over featuring solos and group routines. We stay on
the ice for more excitement…two-wheel excitement in the form of a BMX
Ice Cross demonstration.
The highlight of the night, though, is sure to be the Tricycle Races.
Watch the Saugeen Shores Town Council pedal their kiddie-size three
wheelers across the ice in a race to see who gets to introduce the Torch
Bearers.
The Canadian Olympic Flag and Southampton’s ‘Big Flag’ will be unfurled
as part of the colour presentation.
There will be a reading by the finalists of the public school writing
contest. Then the announcement of the winner who will be rewarded with a
replica of the torch that made its way through Port Elgin and
Southampton.
And finally you’ll be introduced to the Saugeen Shores Torch Bearers.
Coffee, hot chocolate and sweet treats prepared by the Figure Skating
club will be for sale. As well, food will be available at Canteen
At the end of the festivities the rink will be open to all for a
community skate.
It’s going to be an exciting evening. So, join us in Port and South for
the Torch Relay. Then come back to the Plex as the celebration
continues.
