(KINCARDINE, ON.) – The South Bruce OPP are sending a warning to area
residents of a phone scam that was attempted in the South Bruce OPP
detachment area. On Thursday February 25, 2010 around 1:00 pm, a call
was made to a residence in Elmwood, Ontario. The caller advised they
were from Bell Mobility and calling to offer a deal on cell phones. When
the caller started asking for a social insurance number and a credit
card number, the call was terminated and police were notified.
Bell Mobility does call potential customers to offer cell phone
packages, but no calls were made by Bell Mobility on February 25, 2010
to Elmwood.
If you receive a call from Bell Mobility and wish to activate a phone,
you will be asked for:
Date of birth and major credit card number, or
Date of birth and social insurance card number
Anyone that isn’t comfortable providing that information is advised to
