On April 3, 2010 at approximately 3:10pm, Saugeen Shores Police received a complaint that there was a group of people on Chantry Island.  Chantry Island is located in Lake Huron, off the shore of Southampton.  Chantry Island is designated as an Ontario Migratory Bird Sanctuary and unauthorized persons are not permitted on the island.  Using binoculars, police were able to observe a group on the island.  The group was seen to leave the island in a small aluminum boat and a short time later at approximately 4:06pm the boat was observed to capsize. The lake was extremely rough due to very high winds.  There was a wind warning issued for the area by Environment Canada.

The owner of the boat, age 19, was able to swim to the mainland.  He made it to shore at approximately 4:40pm.  The other four persons, ages 19, 19, 20 and 25, were for a period of time unaccounted for. Trenton Search and Rescue was contacted for assistance.   A US Coast Guard helicopter from Michigan arrived to assist.  The four unaccounted for persons had been able to swim back to Chantry Island.  At approximately 5:30pm, the helicopter airlifted the men off the island and returned them to the beach in Southampton.  From there, they were taken by ambulance to Grey Bruce Health Services, Southampton.  All five boaters were treated and released later in the evening. Injuries consisted of hypothermia, water ingestion and abrasions from being thrown against the rocks by the waves.
